It seems that almost everything can be purchased online. From cars to groceries to high-end luxury good, everyone loves the convenience and, in some cases, the great deals. However, there are several pitfalls to be aware of when purchasing glasses online as some people have discovered. Don’t misunderstand, we love a great bargain too. However, when it comes to your eyesight, a few dollars saved could have long-term implications down the road.
We have had several people visiting our practice recently after having purchased glasses online. Here are some of their experiences:
- The frames are too tight or too loose. This is because the same frames can fit differently on each person. When you visit an optical store, you can try the frames on to ensure that they fit and are comfortable.
- They are experiencing blurred vision or are getting headaches even though the lenses match the prescription. When you work with an Optician you are sure that the lenses will be set properly in the frames according to your pupil distance. By the way, one study found that up to 50% of glasses ordered online had the wrong prescription.
- They found the returns process slow, confusing, and expensive. When you work with a reputable optical store, you simply visit them to have any issues resolved.
In addition to the above, some out-of-country online merchants cannot direct bill your insurance and some insurance companies will reject claims on purchases made outside of the country. The bargain you thought you were getting is suddenly an expensive lesson.
