How to Prevent Cataracts

The Canadian Ophthalmological Society has designated June as Cataracts Awareness Month.  Cataracts are a reality for many people over 60 years of age, but the changes in the eye lens usually begin around age 40.  While surgery is successful in repairing the damage, they can be prevented in some cases.

Preventing cataracts involves adopting several healthy lifestyle habits and protective measures:

Regular Eye Exams – Regular eye check-ups can help detect cataracts and other eye problems early.  If you have not had a comprehensive eye examination in the last 2 years, you can book one with us online.

Wear Sunglasses –  Protect your eyes from UV rays by wearing sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.  At Sight Care, we have a wide range of sunglasses that are both functional and fashionable.  We carry top brands like Maui Jim, Rayban, Woodys and Tom Ford.

Healthy Diet – Eat a diet rich in antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, which are found in fruits and vegetables.

Quit Smoking – Smoking increases the risk of cataracts, so quitting can help reduce this risk.

Limit Alcohol – Excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of cataracts.

Manage Health Conditions – Conditions like diabetes can increase the risk of cataracts. Managing these conditions effectively can help lower the risk.

Reduce Eye Strain – Protect your eyes from excessive strain by taking breaks during activities that require intense focus, like reading or using digital devices.

Use Protective Eyewear – Wear safety glasses or goggles when engaging in activities that could cause eye injury.

Some of the strategies for preventing cataracts are also supportive of overall good health.  Adopting these measures can help maintain eye health and reduce the likelihood of developing cataracts.
