How do “screens” impact vision and what can I do to prevent issues?

“Screen time” can have a significant impact on vision and is increasingly seen as a factor in declining vision. Over the last few years, more people are working or doing school work online and are spending extended time in front of a screen. Screens, such as those on smartphones, computers, tablets, and televisions, can affect vision in several ways. In this post, we will discuss some common effects and tips for reducing their impact.

Prolonged screen use can lead to digital eye strain, also known as computer vision syndrome. Symptoms include eye discomfort, dryness, headaches, and blurred vision. This occurs because when looking at screens, people tend to blink less, which can lead to dry eyes. To prevent these symptoms, follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break, and look at something 20 feet away. This helps relax your eye muscles.

Myths and truths about blue light | IrisTechBlue Light Exposure:

Screens emit blue light, which can interfere with your circadian rhythm and sleep patterns, potentially leading to insomnia. To reduce the exposure to blue light, use blue light filters or apps that reduce the amount of blue light emitted by screens, especially in the evening. Some devices and screens have built-in blue light reduction settings. Special treatments to lenses can also help reduce the exposure.

Extended screen time, particularly in children, has been associated with an increased risk of myopia development and progression. To reduce the onset of Myopia, encourage outdoor activities and limit screen time, especially for young children. Follow the 20-20-20 rule and maintain proper posture while using screens. For children, it is possible to slow down the progression of Myopia with a special lens designed for this purpose. You should schedule an appointment with an Optometrist to see if your child is a candidate for these lenses.

How Is Your Digital Dependence Impacting Your Mental Health?

Digital Dependence

While not a specific vision issue, excessive screen time can lead to digital dependence, which may cause individuals to neglect other activities and outdoor time. This can further exacerbate vision-related issues. It is wise to establish screen time limits for both children and adults. Encourage a balanced lifestyle with physical activities and outdoor time.

Constantly focusing on screens at a fixed distance can lead to accommodative issues, making it difficult to focus on objects at different distances. Remember to periodically shift your focus from the screen to objects at different distances. This can help maintain the flexibility of your eye’s focusing system.

For individuals with existing vision problems, such as astigmatism or presbyopia, screens may exacerbate these issues. Ensure your prescription is up-to-date. Consult with an eye care professional if you experience worsening symptoms.

In summary, screens can affect vision in various ways, primarily due to prolonged use, blue light exposure, and poor viewing habits. To minimize the impact on your vision, it’s important to practice good screen hygiene, take regular breaks, and seek professional advice if you experience persistent discomfort or changes in your vision.
