How Contact Lens Wearers Can Prevent Eye Infections

Eye infections can be a serious problem for contact lens wearers. Eye infections can cause immediate discomfort and long-term complications so It is crucial to take steps to minimize the risk of infection and protect your vision. Here are some tips about how contact lens wears can prevent eye infections:

  1. We learned about the value of hand washing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Wash your hands before touching your contacts or eyes. Use mild hand soap and rinse thoroughly to avoid getting soap in your eyes. This simple step can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
  2. Don’t share your contacts with anyone else. Your lenses are prescribed for you and should not be shared with others. Sharing lenses can transfer germs and lead to long-term eye infection problems.
  3. Store your lenses in a cleaned contact lens solution when you’re not wearing them. Follow the replacement intervals directed by your eye doctor (daily, weekly or monthly) since most wearers opt for disposable lenses. Avoid wearing your contacts when swimming or doing activities that could contaminate them and cause an eye infection, as public swimming pools are loaded with bacteria and chlorine could damage your lenses.
  4. Always follow your eye doctor’s instructions for wearing and caring for your contacts. Don’t take shortcuts when putting in or taking out your lenses. If you have any questions or concerns, visit an Optometrist or Optician to get all your questions answered.
