How Can Drinking Alcohol Impact my Eye Sight?

In our last post, we discussed the impact of smoking on your eyesight.  In this post, we will discuss the impact of drinking alcohol on your eyesight.

Moderate alcohol consumption is generally not considered harmful to eye health. However, excessive and chronic alcohol consumption can lead to various eye-related problems. The Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse and Addiction states that consuming up to two “standard drinks” per week is safe.  Beyond that, an individual is increasing their risk of heath impacts.

Here are some ways in which drinking alcohol can impact your eyesight.

Dry Eyes: Alcohol can contribute to dehydration, which may lead to dry eyes. Dry eye syndrome can cause discomfort, irritation, and blurred vision. Staying adequately hydrated can help mitigate these effects.

Optic Neuropathy: Chronic alcohol abuse can cause optic neuropathy, a condition that damages the optic nerve,         leading to vision loss. This condition is more likely to occur in individuals with poor nutrition because of alcohol-related malnutrition.

Reduced Night Vision: Excessive alcohol consumption can interfere with the ability to see well in low-light conditions, affecting night vision. This can be particularly concerning for activities that require good vision in the dark.
