Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, means that an individual cannot see objects that are at a distance. For a driver, this could be street signs and for a student, it could be the board at the front of the classroom. Myopia or nearsightedness is a progressive condition and can worsen as an individual gets older.
Adults with myopia may have the condition for life. However, for young patients, the progression can slow down if caught early. The earlier myopia is discovered the better the outcome for the patient. The benefits of slowing the progression of myopia are significant on their own. However, it can also have additional benefits because current approaches may prevent other severe eye conditions later in life like glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachment, or severe vision loss.
What Can We Do?
In recent years, the optical industry has developed specialty glasses and contact lenses that can slow the progression of this condition. Over the last few years, a few leading optical companies have released both optical and contact lenses that are focused on helping to slow down myopia.
The Importance of Annual Eye Tests
It is critically important that children have an annual eye examination regardless of whether they complain of eyesight challenges. Some conditions can only be properly diagnosed with regular comprehensive exams. In Ontario, OHIP covers comprehensive eye exams for children
19 and under so this is a no-cost way to give your child the gift of optimal eyesight for years to come.
